The HMS Andromeda Association was formed to maintain the bonds of comradeship between all who served aboard HMS Andromeda (F57) during her twenty-five years of Royal Navy service, from commissioning in 1968 to decommissioning in 1993.
We are a community of shipmates, families, and friends, united by one remarkable ship and the experiences we shared aboard her. From the sweltering heat of the Persian Gulf to the freezing spray of the North Atlantic, from the tension of the Falklands to the camaraderie of the mess deck, Andromeda’s ship’s company shared something that lasts a lifetime.
Known affectionately as “The Heinz Varieties” – thanks to her pennant number F57, Andromeda was the last warship built at Portsmouth Royal Dockyard, a fitting finale for a shipyard that gave the world HMS Dreadnought and centuries of naval history. She went on to serve in some of the most significant events of the Cold War era and beyond.
The Association exists for three simple reasons:
We are completely inclusive. All ranks, all branches, all eras, all commissions. Officers and ratings. Royal Navy and Royal Marines, WRNS. Attached personnel from any service. If you set foot on Andromeda’s decks, you’re one of us. Your families are part of our family too.
We don’t stand on ceremony. There’s no dress code (unless you want one), no hierarchy beyond what’s needed to keep things running, and no agenda beyond friendship, remembrance, and making sure everyone has a good run ashore.
If you’re a former shipmate who’s been wondering whether to get in touch – do it. You’ll be glad you did.
